OK, so tonight I went over to MIFA for my last night running a group for kids who have witnessed domestic violence and abuse. I work with the 4-7 year olds. These are kids who live in the MIFA apartments. In other words, these are kids who would be homeless if they weren't getting this rent-free housing. They get a free meal when they come. Tonight, they got ham sandwiches on white bread. They get 2 pickle chips and a slice of tomato, but they never eat that. They get a little pack of mayo. They also got a bag of chips, cookies, and a 16 oz can of Coke. Regular Classic Coca-Cola... caffeine laden, sugar-filled. What in the fuck?! They came in relatively alert, and by the time they were finishing up their Cokes, their behavior changes dramatically. By the end, they were just racing all over the place. Isn't it enough to be a drug baby, living in poverty, and witnessing violence on a regular basis? Do they have to be undernourished and overfed, too?!
